In honor of Black History Month, Nosh & Grog Provisions is proud to present our homage to the men & women of the black community who fervently made the most of their tribulations and continued to persevere despite the obstacles. For Black History month, Nosh & Grog will be featuring our very own version of Shoebox Lunches.
“Shoebox Lunches” – During the Jim Crow Era, as African American men & women began to “freely” travel, they were not welcome to eat at many restaurants along the road, or even to shop in a market for food, so they packed shoebox lunches. Although not always packed in an old shoebox, these lunches consisted of premade food that didn’t require refrigeration and could sustain you for the entirety of travel and work.
Our version features dishes that our Chef Chelven Randolph grew up eating during long roads trips with his family. His mother, Linda, grew up in the deep south of Florida in the 1960s. Her family would frequently travel to places such as Alabama and Georgia to visit family members and in turn, would pack Shoebox Lunches. Although segregation was eventually outlawed, Linda recognized the importance of passing along the deep significance rooted in this practice that she learned from her parents.
